Here's my entry for the first round of the Naruto OC Tourney 2017 for :iconnarutofanclub:

My character Kazō Yakusho was paired against Roku by :iconpenelopejadewing:

The image shows Kazō's trap being sprung while Tobi watches the battle from the shadows. Kazō is shown in his Shippuden form while Roku is in his Boruto attire. The story of the fight is below.

Roku looked around the cavern he had just snuck into. He had to hurry, before someone came back.

“Oh?... and here I thought this place would be empty,” a voice called out. Roku turned to see a young Grass shinobi in the cave with him. “You kinda look like that Leaf ninja. One of the ‘Legendary Something-or-Other’.”

“You must be referring to Orochimaru, one of the Legendary Sanin,” Roku said.

“Yeah, that guy,” Kazō went on. “I didn’t know he had a fan club. Hey, if I join, would I have to wear one of those weird belt things t–?”

“I have to wonder what a Grass ninja is doing so far from his village”, Roku interrupted, becoming annoyed.

Kazō smirked, noticing Roku’s missing headband, “And I would wonder what a rogue ninja is doing so far from his village, but I guess that’s kinda the point.”

Roku glared at Kazō, “I have no reason to tell you my goals.”

“Oh, come on. We both know this isn’t some normal cave. We’re both here for the same thing. To find info on this ‘Akatsuki’ group that everyone’s been talking about.”

“Fair enough. Though you realize I can’t just let you leave with intel I could take for myself, right?” Roku asked.

*sigh* "I guess not,” Kazō answered.

A smaller voice called out from a few feet away, “Are you sure you should be doing this right now, Roku?” It was a spider, clinging to the wall.

Roku answered her, “It’s fine Jun, keep exploring the cave.”

“Hey! That’s not fair,” Kazō complained.

“Just make it quick,” the spider said while scurrying higher up the wall. “Look, he’s only got one arm. It shouldn’t take you long.”

Roku noticed the wooden left arm as Kazō grew annoyed. He decided to strike quickly, and lunged Kazō’s left side with a kunai in each hand. However, Kazō brought his prosthetic up and blocked both knives with it, grabbing one by the blade.

“If you think that’ll give you an edge, you’re wrong,” Kazō told him.

“Hm, you’ve turned a drawback into an asset. I know what that’s like,” Roku said, jumping back. “So, you heard my name already. What’s yours?”

“Kazō Yakusho.”

“Well Kazō, that’s an interesting ability you have. I’ll show you one of my own.” Roku raised a hand towards Kazō. After a few moments, Kazō weaved to one side, with thin fibers glinting where he had been standing.

“I’m one of the best trapper-nin in all of Kusagakure,” he said. “I handle wire strings all the time, so your threads aren’t hard to see. Considering how fine the strands are and your partner over there, I take it that was spider silk you just shot out at me?”

"hmph, I figured you’d be a bit more surprised about it,” Roku said. “No matter. That’s not the only thing up my sleeve.”

Roku began using water release techniques. His speed and accuracy with them left Kazō struggling to evade. He began running around the cavern, looking around the area while dodging. As the blasts got closer, he prepared his own jutsu.

“Roku! He’s got spikes growing out of his hand!” Jun called from a spot on the wall.

“I told you to just keep searching!” he called back. “You’ll be safer that way!”

“I have eight eyes, Roku! I can search for clues and watch your back at the same time!”

Kazō used the distraction to get a better look around the room.
Crap, he thought. Everything’s made of solid rock in here. I won’t be able to anchor any wires down. And this guy uses them too, so I doubt he’ll get caught in something simple.

The only other thing in that section of the cave was a large statue at one end. It had a gaping mouth and multiple closed eyes. Two large, stone hands jutted out of the ground in front of it, with shackles stretching between them. Kazō ran over to the hands in an effort to take cover from the renewed water attacks. Looking up, he saw Roku perched on the underside of one of the hands, like a spider watching its prey.

Kazō jumped up to the top of the hands to get a better view of them. He then glanced up at the statue itself. A thread almost wrapped around him. He threw a kunai at the source and made a few hand seals. The knife he threw had been made of wood. It began to deform as it flew, and became tendrils. While Roku dodged them, Kazō climbed up to the statue’s face.

Roku managed to evade the ensnaring tendrils and shot more silk at Kazō. It caught him this time, and Roku yanked him to the ground. However, Kazō easily broke free by splintering his prosthetic and cutting through. He began to run back towards the center of the room.

Roku jumped into the air and performed some hand seals. “For someone who makes traps, you don’t seem to have much of a plan. Water Release: Exploding Water Colliding Wave!”

A torrent of water was soon surging down on Kazō. Within moments, the whole room was flooded. Roku clung to the wall, out of reach of the water. Kazō surfaced and hulled himself out, standing on it with chakra.

“Look at you,” Roku called out. “You come in here making jokes and run from my attacks. I won’t let you stand in the way of what I want! If you really want to search this place, then prove it!... Not that it will do you any good now.”

Kazō looked around at all the water. “You’re right, my fighting style isn’t suited for water, or even a rocky cave.” He turned to face Roku once more. “But you just gave me an opening. The trap is set, and it’s already been sprung.” He performed hand seals of his own, then knelt down to stick his prosthetic into the water. “Ninja Art: Wood Manipulation,” he said, as tendrils started growing from the arm.

“What do you mean ‘the trap is set’? You haven’t done anything.”

There was a pause, then the water level began to fall. Surprised, Roku looked down to see it draining into large cracks in the stone floor. In a few spots, thick roots could be seen breaking through the rock.

Before Roku could do anything, Kazō turned and ran towards the large statue. “You’re not getting away!” he yelled, and jumped down to follow.

Kazō was nearing the two stone hands. His wooden arm quivered, and a large plank of wood shot up to lean on the chain between them. He swiftly darted up the ramp and looked back when he reached the top. Roku was steps away from the ramp when he saw something fall out of the statue’s mouth. It was a cylinder of wood that quickly grew to a massive size as it fell towards Kazō.

So, the heavy weight is meant to launch me when I step onto the lower end of the plank? I won’t let that happen
. Roku stopped short of the plank just as it catapulted upward. Kazō was dropping with the weighted end, looking shocked that Roku caught on. But just as suddenly, he grinned.

Roku’s eyes widened as he saw the weighted end swing down and continue in a circular path. The plank wasn’t lying on the chain, it was grown around it, using it as a pivoting axle! He tried to jump out of the way, but his feet stuck fast to the floor. The weighted end continued on its path and struck Roku.

“Kodama Hammer!” Kazō yelled, as Roku was torn from the floor and slammed hard into the wall. He crumpled to the ground. Kazō walked over to him.

“I hid that bit of wood in the statue’s mouth when I climbed up there earlier,” he explained. “To be honest, I expected you to have already reached the plank by the time the weight fell. But just in case, I left something right in front of it. You see, most woody plants can excrete a viscous fluid called resin. It hardens quickly when exposed to air. That’s what your feet stuck to, as it puddled up from those roots I grew beneath us. You probably would have noticed it,” he smirked, “if the floor wasn’t already wet from your little flood earlier.”

“What?! There’s no way you could have planned that I’d use that technique,” Roku said.

“Like I said, you gave me an opening. I was waiting for some way to ensure you would step in the resin without noticing,” Kazō responded.

Tch. And what if I didn’t chase after you? What if– “

“You thought I was going after Jun, right?” Kazō interrupted. “You flooded the room. The only place she could have still searched while avoiding the water is that statue. You knew I could avoid your silk, and you wouldn’t use a water jutsu if I was too close to her location. So you ran after me. Don’t worry, I only trapped her in a wooden cage. She was already searching inside the statue’s mouth when I went up there.”

Roku tried to get up but couldn’t. Kazō began walking away and continued. “You’re lying in more resin. It’ll be a while before you manage to break free from it.”

“So, you had this all planned from the start?”

Kazō stopped with a surprised look. “Of course not. But what kind of trapper would I be if I couldn’t come up with something on the fly?”

Roku glared at him from the floor. Kazō grinned. “I guess I’ll go exploring this hideout now. Who knows, maybe the Akatsuki will help free you if they stop by here again. See ya.”
